Robert Knutson, Chartered Arbitrator (Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK), Canadian member, ICC International Court of Arbitration 2000 - 2005, arbitrator and advisor, expert on FIDIC/international construction, infrastructure, energy, oil & gas, power, sale of goods and other international contracts.  I may  also act as mediator or a local London lawyer/arbitration advisor for overseas parties who may wish to know the London or international scene/arbitrators/law in depth.

I have been sole arbitrator or chairman in international construction, international sale of goods, international telecoms, international shipping, international shareholder disputes (M&A), international mining, international power plant, oil and gas and distributorship disputes.

I am an independent international lawyer, of some 27 years experience, available for appointments as counsel or as an international arbitrator or national arbitrator deciding under domestic systems of law. I am available to act or sit as arbitrator on any type of international dispute, and have particular experience in international sale of goods, construction law, joint ventures, enforcement of (and resisting) judgments, public international law, comparative law, and American, Middle Eastern, Malaysian, Japanese, American, French and English law and business practices. I am also experienced in relation to Nigeria, Russia, India and China.

Domestically, I have adjudicated EOT (including ‘time at large’) delay and disruption, variation and various non-payment disputes.

FIDIC - for many years I have been an expert on the FIDIC family of contracts, and have conducted FIDIC based disputes and worked on FIDIC based contracts literally all over the World.

I have seen many of the World’s largest arbitration awards in recent years, and I work hard to gain a good insight into best practice in ICC and international arbitration from this experience, which also of course, helps me understand the finer points of international law, legal and practice theories and tools and tactics (the title of an upcoming publication). I also know many of the world’s leading arbitrators and counsel.

Cases with a significant counsel role include the Channel Tunnel, The Ikarian Reefer, BCCI, Sandakan Water Supply system, Mohamed Al Fayed v Lonrho, the Eurostar trains, and the Hong Kong Strategic Sewage system.

Contract drafting jobs include, the North East Coal Project in British Columbia, the Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia, a port repair job in Saudi Arabia, a refinery upgrade in Britain, an office project in the city of London, and a power project and transmission lines in Africa.

As I have lower overheads, my rates are very competitive internationally, and much better than those of city lawyers with less experience. My work as Dispute Resolver or mediator or for drafting/legal advice, seminars, talks, etc is all done via a company. At the moment and unless stated otherwise, all my work is done via RK Ideas (Hong Kong) Limited, a Hong Kong company.
